           AngusandIhadalwaysbeenveryfondoftheBible—thestrangeoldtempleofwonders,fullofallthepoemsandtragediesandhistoriesofman,hishatesandbattlesandlovesandfollies,andoftheWisdomoftheuniverseandthepromisesofthesplendorsofit,andwhicheventhoseofuswhothinkourselvesthemostbelievingneitherwhollybelievenorwillunderstand.Wehadporedoverandtalkedofit.Wehadneverthoughtofitasonlyapiousthingtodo.Thebookwastousoneofthemystic,awe-inspiring,propheticmarvelsoftheworld.

           Thatwaswhatmademesay,halfwhispering:“Ihavewonderedandwonderedwhatitmeant—thatverseinIsaiah:‘BeholdtheformerthingsarecometopassandnewthingsdoIdeclare;beforetheyspringforthItellyouofthem.’Perhapsitmeansonlytheunrollingofthescroll.”

           “Aye,aye!”saidAngus;“itisfullofsuchdeepsayings,andnoneofuswilllistentothem.”
