HearingthisapologytheTigerandtheLionstoppedlashingtheirtailsandretreatedwithdignifiedstepstothesideofthePrincess.
"Noonemustinjureoneofourfriendsinourpresence,"growledtheLion;andZebrantoJimandwhisperedthatunlesshecontrolledhistemperinthefuturehewouldprobablybetorntopieces.
ThentheTinWoodmancutastraightandstronglimbfromatreewithhisgleamingaxeandmadeanewlegandanewearfortheSawhorse;andwhentheyhadbeensecurelyfastenedinplacePrincessOzmatookthecoronetfromherownheadandplacedituponthatofthewinneroftherace.Saidshe:
"Myfriend,IrewardyouforyourswiftnessbyproclaimingyouPrinceofHorses,whetherofwoodorofflesh;andhereafterallotherhorses—intheLandofOz,atleast—mustbeconsideredimitations,andyoutherealChampionofyourrace."
Therewasmoreapplauseatthis,andthenOzmahadthejewelledsaddlereplacedupontheSawhorseandherselfrodethevictorbacktothecityattheheadofthegrandprocession.
"Ioughttobeafairy,"grumbledJim,asheslowlydrewthebuggyhome;"fortobejustanordinaryhorseinafairycountryistobeofnoaccountwhatever.It’snoplaceforus,Zeb."
"It’sluckywegothere,though,"saidtheboy;andJimthoughtofthedarkcave,andagreedwithhim.
