YoumaybesurethefolksofOzdidtheirbestwithsuchadistinguishedcompanywatchingthem,andfinallyZebofferedtowrestlewithalittleMunchkinwhoseemedtobethechampion.InappearancehewastwiceasoldasZeb,forhehadlongpointedwhiskersandworeapeakedhatwithlittlebellsallaroundthebrimofit,whichtinkledgailyashemoved.ButalthoughtheMunchkinwashardlytallenoughtocometoZeb’sshoulderhewassostrongandcleverthathelaidtheboythreetimesonhisbackwithapparentease.
Zebwasgreatlyastonishedathisdefeat,andwhentheprettyPrincessjoinedherpeopleinlaughingathimheproposedaboxing-matchwiththeMunchkin,towhichthelittleOzitereadilyagreed.ButthefirsttimethatZebmanagedtogivehimasharpboxontheearstheMunchkinsatdownuponthegroundandcrieduntilthetearsrandownhiswhiskers,becausehehadbeenhurt.ThismadeZeblaugh,inturn,andtheboyfeltcomfortedtofindthatOzmalaughedasmerrilyatherweepingsubjectasshehadathim.
JustthentheScarecrowproposedaracebetweentheSawhorseandtheCab-horse;andalthoughalltheothersweredelightedatthesuggestiontheSawhorsedrewback,saying:
"Sucharacewouldnotbefair."
