Shemadeasign,andastairwasbrought,andthenshecalledtome,andImountedandsatbesideherinthegoldenhalf-castleunderthecanopyofroyalsnakes.Thegirlwhostoodbehindinattendancefannedusbothwithperfumedfeathers,andatawordfromPhorenicethemammothwasturned,bearingusbacktowardstheroyalpyramidbythewaythroughwhichithadcome.Atthesametimealsoalltheothermachineryofsplendourwasputinmotion.Thesoldiersandthegaudilybedeckedciviltradersfellintoprocessionbeforeandbehind,andInotedthatabodyoftroops,heavilyarmed,marchedoneachofthemammoth’sflanks.
Phoreniceturnedtomewithasmile.“Youpiquedme,”shesaid,“atfirst.”
