Inthecourseoftimeasudden“stroke”oftheguardian’shadthrownhispersonalaffairsintoastateofconfusionfromwhich—afterhiswidelylamenteddeath—itbecameevidentthatitwouldnotbepossibletoextricatehisward’sinheritance.Noonedeploredthismoresincerelythanhiswidow,whosawinitonemoreproofofherhusband’slifehavingbeensacrificedtotheinnumerabledutiesimposedonhim,andwhocouldhardly—butforthecounselsofreligion—havebroughtherselftopardontheyounggirlforherindirectshareinhasteninghisend.Sophydidnotresentthispointofview.Shewasreallymuchsorrierforherguardian’sdeaththanforthelossofherinsignificantfortune.Thelatterhadrepresentedonlythemeansofholdingherinbondage,anditsdisappearancewastheoccasionofherimmediateplungeintothewidebrightseaoflifesurroundingtheisland—ofhercaptivity.
