Hisspeech,loudandemphaticatfirst,whentheideaofwhathehadtosaywasfreshinhismind,lapsedandlowereditselfattheendofhissentencesasthoughhehadalreadyabandonedandlostinterestinthatthought,sothattheconcludingwordswereindistinct,beneaththegreybeardandmustache.Alsoattimestherewasthefaintestsuggestionofalisp.
“Iwrotethatpoem,”hazardedPresley,“atatimewhenIwasterriblyupset.Ilive,”heconcluded,“ordidliveontheLosMuertosranchinTulareCounty—MagnusDerrick’sranch.”
“TheRailroad’sranchLEASEDtoMr.Derrick,”observedShelgrim.
Presleyspreadouthishandswithahelpless,resignedgesture.
