Andthenafteralongtimethereturnofreason,theconsciousnessthathisfeetweresetupontheroadtoLosMuertos,andthathewasfleeingterror-stricken,gasping,allbutinsanewithhysteria.Thenthenever-to-be-forgottennightthatensued,whenhedescendedintothepit,horrifiedatwhathesupposedhehaddone,atonemomentriddenwithremorse,atanotherragingagainsthisownfeebleness,hislackofcourage,hiswretched,vacillatingspirit.Butmorninghadcome,andwithittheknowledgethathehadfailed,andthebaserassurancethathewasnotevenremotelysuspected.Hisownescapehadbeennolessmiraculousthanthatofhisenemy,andhehadfallenonhiskneesininarticulateprayer,weeping,pouringouthisthankstoGodforthedeliverancefromthegulftotheverybrinkofwhichhisfeethadbeendrawn.
