           Hourlythecrowdincreasedtillshoulderstouchedandelbows,tillfreecirculationbecameimpeded,thencongested,thenimpossible.Thecrowd,asolidmass,waswedgedtightfromstorefronttostorefront.Andfromallthisthrong,thissingleunit,thisliving,breathingorganism—thePeople—thereroseadroning,terriblenote.Itwasnotyetthewild,fierceclamourofriotandinsurrection,shrill,highpitched;butitwasabeginning,thegrowloftheawakenedbrute,feelingtheironinitsflank,heavingupitsheadwithbaredteeth,thethroatvibratingtothelong,indrawnsnarlofwrath.

           Thustheforenoonpassed,whilethepeople,theirbulkgrowinghourlyvaster,kepttothestreets,movingslowlybackwardandforward,oscillatinginthegroovesofthethoroughfares,thesteady,low-pitchedgrowlrisingcontinuallyintothehot,stillair.

           Then,atlength,abouttwelveo’clock,themovementofthethrongassumeddefinitedirection.ItsettowardstheOperaHouse.Presley,whohadlefthisponyattheCityliverystable,foundhimselfcaughtinthecurrentandcarriedslowlyforwardinitsdirection.Hisarmswerepinionedtohissidesbythepress,thecrushagainsthisbodywasallbutrib-cracking,hecouldhardlydrawhisbreath.Allaroundhimroseandfellwaveafterwaveoffaces,hundredsuponhundreds,thousandsuponthousands,red,lowering,sullen.Allweresetinonedirectionandslowly,slowlytheyadvanced,crowdingcloser,tilltheyalmosttouchedoneanother.
