Theirhorses,includingeventhebuckskinmarethatDykehadridden,werestillatthestation.Thepartyswungthemselvesup,Delaneyexclaiming,“Here’sMYmount,”ashebestrodethebuckskin.
AtGuadalajara,thetwobloodhoundswerepickedupagain.Urgingthejadedhorsestoagallop,thepartysetoffalongtheUpperRoad,keepingasharplookouttorightandleftfortracesofDyke’sabandonmentoftheengine.
ThreemilesbeyondtheLongTrestle,theyfoundS.Behrmanholdinghissaddlehorsebythebridle,andlookingattentivelyatatrailthathadbeenbrokenthroughthestandingwheatonQuienSabe.Thepartydrewrein.
