           Beyondthefinelineofthehorizons,overthecurveoftheglobe,theshoulderoftheearth,wereotherranches,equallyvast,andbeyondthese,others,andbeyondthese,stillothers,theimmensitiesmultiplying,lengtheningoutvasterandvaster.ThewholegiganticsweepoftheSanJoaquinexpanded,Titanic,beforetheeyeofthemind,flagellatedwithheat,quiveringandshimmeringunderthesun’sredeye.Atlongintervals,afaintbreathofwindoutofthesouthpassedslowlyoverthelevelsofthebakedandemptyearth,accentuatingthesilence,markingoffthestillness.Itseemedtoexhalefromthelanditself,aprolongedsighasofdeepfatigue.Itwastheseasonaftertheharvest,andthegreatearth,themother,afteritsperiodofreproduction,itspainsoflabour,deliveredofthefruitofitsloins,sleptthesleepofexhaustion,theinfinitereposeofthecolossus,benignant,eternal,strong,thenourisherofnations,thefeederofanentireworld.Ha!thereitwas,hisepic,hisinspiration,hisWest,histhunderingprogressionofhexameters.Asuddenuplift,asenseofexhilaration,ofphysicalexaltationappearedabruptlytosweepPresleyfromhisfeet.Asfromapointhighabovetheworld,heseemedtodominateauniverse,awholeorderofthings.Hewasdizzied,stunned,stupefied,hismorbidsupersensitivemindreeling,drunkwiththeintoxicationofmereimmensity.Stupendousideasforwhichtherewerenonamesdroveheadlongthroughhisbrain.Terrible,formlessshapes,vaguefigures,gigantic,monstrous,distorted,whirledatagallopthroughhisimagination.
