           ButwhenOstermanandMagnusatlastfellinwithAnnixterinthevestibuleoftheLickHouse,onMontgomeryStreet,nothingcouldbegotoutofhim.Hewasinanexecrablehumour.WhenMagnushadbroachedthesubjectofbusiness,hehaddeclaredthatallbusinesscouldgotopot,andwhenOsterman,histongueinhischeek,hadpermittedhimselfamostdistantallusiontoafeemalegirl,Annixterhadcursedhimfora“busy-face”sovociferouslyandtersely,thatevenOstermanwascowed.

           “Catfur,tomakekitten-breeches,”retortedAnnixterwithoracularvagueness.

           Twoweeksbeforethistime,AnnixterhadcomeuptothecityandhadgoneatoncetoacertainhotelonBushStreet,behindtheFirstNationalBank,thatheknewwaskeptbyafamilyconnectionoftheTrees.InhisconjecturethatHilmaandherparentswouldstophere,hewasright.Theirnameswereontheregister.Ignoringcustom,Annixtermarchedstraightuptotheirrooms,andbeforehewaswellawareofit,was“eatingcrow”beforeoldmanTree.

           Hilmaandhermotherwereoutatthetime.Lateron,Mrs.Treereturnedalone,leavingHilmatospendthedaywithoneofhercousinswholivedfaroutonStanyanStreetinalittlehousefacingthepark.
