           S.Behrman,theclerk,andthemanwiththedoor-closingapparatusinvolvedthemselvesinalongargument,gazingintentlyatthetoppanelofthedoor.Themanwhohadcometofixtheapparatuswasunwillingtoguaranteeit,unlessasignwasputontheoutsideofthedoor,warningincomersthatthedoorwasself-closing.Thissignwouldcostfifteencentsextra.

           “Butyoudidn’tsayanythingaboutthiswhenthethingwasordered,”declaredS.Behrman.“No,Iwon’tpayit,myfriend.It’sanovercharge.”

           “Youneedn’tthink,”observedtheclerk,“thatjustbecauseyouaredealingwiththeRailroadyouaregoingtoworkus.”

           Genslingercamein,accompaniedbyDelaney.S.Behrmanandtheclerk,abruptlydismissingthemanwiththedoor-closingmachine,putthemselvesbehindthecounterandengagedinconversationwiththesetwo.GenslingerintroducedDelaney.
