“Seethatfellowyonder,”hesaidtoMagnus,indicatingacertainmiddle-agedman,flamboyantlydressed,whoworehishairlong,whowasafflictedwithsoreeyes,andthecollarofwhosevelvetcoatwassprinkledwithdandruff,“that’sHartrath,theartist,amanabsolutelydevoidofeventhecommonestdecency.Howhegotinhereisamysterytome.”
Yet,whenthisHartrathcameacrosstosay“Howdoyoudo”toLyman,Lymanwasaseagerinhiscordialityashiswarmestfriendcouldhaveexpected.
