           Billy,thestableman,andhisassistantwereawakened,andtheteamswerehitchedup.Thestableyardwasfullofamazeofswinginglanternsandbuggylamps.Thehorsesfretted,champingthebits;thecarry-allscreakedwiththestrainingofleatherandspringsastheyreceivedtheirloads.Ateveryinstantoneheardtherattleofwheelsasvehicleaftervehicledisappearedinthenight.

           Afine,drizzlingrainwasfalling,andthelampsbegantoshowdiminavaguehazeoforangelight.
