Shetookacleannapkinfromthesideboarddrawerandlaiditdownbytheplate.

Hilmawassilent.Annixtersawthetearsinhereyes.

Sheshookherhead.
“No,”shesaid.
“Nowhat?Youwon’tlikeme?Isthatit?”
Hilma,blinkingatthenapkinthroughhertears,noddedtosay,Yes,thatwasit.Annixterhesitatedamoment,frowning,harassedandperplexed.
“Youdon’tlikemeatall,hey?”
AtlengthHilmafoundherspeech.Inherlowvoice,lowerandmorevelvetythanever,shesaid:
“No—Idon’tlikeyouatall.”
Then,asthetearssuddenlyoverpoweredher,shedashedahandacrosshereyes,andranfromtheroomandoutofdoors.
