           JustbeforeAnnixter’sarrival,shehadbeensitting,thoughtful,inherlongchair,anopenvolumeofpoemsturneddownuponherlap,herglancelosingitselfintheimmensityofLosMuertosthat,fromtheedgeofthelawncloseby,unrolleditself,gigantic,towardthefar,southernhorizon,wrinkledandserratedaftertheseason’sploughing.Theearth,hithertogreywithdust,wasnowupturnedandbrown.Asfarastheeyecouldreach,itwasemptyofalllife,bare,mournful,absolutelystill;and,asshelooked,thereseemedtohermorbidimagination—diseasedanddisturbedwithlongbrooding,sickwiththemonotonyofrepeatedsensation—tobedisengagedfromallthisimmensity,asenseofavastoppression,formless,disquieting.Theterrorofsheerbignessgrewslowlyinhermind;lonelinessbeyondwordsgraduallyenvelopedher.Shewaslostinalltheselimitlessreachesofspace.Hadshebeenabandonedinmid-ocean,inanopenboat,herterrorcouldhardlyhavebeengreater.
