           Afewmomentslater,herodeoutofthebarnandthestable-yard,afreshcigarbetweenhisteeth,hishatslantedoverhisfaceagainsttheraysofthesun,asyetlowintheeast.Hecrossedtheirrigatingditchandgainedthetrail—theshortcutoverintoLosMuertos,bywayofHooven’s.Itledsouthandwestintothelowgroundovergrownbygrey-greenwillowsbyBrodersonCreek,atthistimeoftherainyseasonastreamofconsiderablevolume,fartherondippingsharplytopassunderneaththeLongTrestleoftherailroad.
