Presleywouldhaveabhorredit—thisfeedingofthePeople,thisgorgingofthehumananimal,eagerforitsmeat.Vanamee,simple,uncomplicated,livingsoclosetonatureandtherudimentarylife,understooditssignificance.Heknewverywellthatwithinashorthalf-hourafterthismealthemenwouldthrowthemselvesdownintheirbunkstosleepwithoutmoving,inertandstupefiedwithfatigue,tillthemorning.Work,food,andsleep,alllifereducedtoitsbareessentials,uncomplex,honest,healthy.Theywerestrong,thesemen,withthestrengthofthesoiltheyworked,intouchwiththeessentialthings,backagaintothestartingpointofcivilisation,coarse,vital,real,andsane.
