           Itwasabitternight,sowedrewonourulstersandwrappedcravatsaboutourthroats. Outside,thestarswereshiningcoldlyinacloudlesssky,andthebreathofthepassers-byblewoutintosmokelikesomanypistolshots. Ourfootfallsrangoutcrisplyandloudlyasweswungthroughthedoctors’quarter,WimpoleStreet,HarleyStreet,andsothroughWigmoreStreetintoOxfordStreet. InaquarterofanhourwewereinBloomsburyattheAlphaInn,whichisasmallpublic-houseatthecornerofoneofthestreetswhichrunsdownintoHolborn. Holmespushedopenthedooroftheprivatebarandorderedtwoglassesofbeerfromtheruddy-faced,white-apronedlandlord. 

           "Yourbeershouldbeexcellentifitisasgoodasyourgeese,"saidhe. 

           "Mygeese!"Themanseemedsurprised. 

           "Yes.IwasspeakingonlyhalfanhouragotoMr.HenryBaker,whowasamemberofyourgooseclub." 

           "Ah!yes,Isee.Butyousee,sir,them’snotourgeese." 

           "Indeed!Whose,then?"
