           "Anditdid,thoughtheyhardlyfounduponthemud-bankwhattheyhadfearedtofind. ItwasNevilleSt.Clair’scoat,andnotNevilleSt.Clair,whichlayuncoveredasthetidereceded. Andwhatdoyouthinktheyfoundinthepockets?" 

           "Icannotimagine." 

           "No,Idon’tthinkyouwouldguess. Everypocketstuffedwithpenniesandhalf-pennies421penniesand270half-pennies. Itwasnowonderthatithadnotbeensweptawaybythetide. Butahumanbodyisadifferentmatter. Thereisafierceeddybetweenthewharfandthehouse. Itseemedlikelyenoughthattheweightedcoathadremainedwhenthestrippedbodyhadbeensuckedawayintotheriver."

           "No,sir,butthefactsmightbemetspeciouslyenough. SupposethatthismanBoonehadthrustNevilleSt.Clairthroughthewindow,thereisnohumaneyewhichcouldhaveseenthedeed. Whatwouldhedothen? Itwouldofcourseinstantlystrikehimthathemustgetridofthetell-talegarments. Hewouldseizethecoat,then,andbeintheactofthrowingitout,whenitwouldoccurtohimthatitwouldswimandnotsink. Hehaslittletime,forhehasheardthescuffledownstairswhenthewifetriedtoforceherwayup,andperhapshehasalreadyheardfromhislascarconfederatethatthepolicearehurryingupthestreet.
