           ItwasdifficulttorefuseanyofSherlockHolmes’srequests,fortheywerealwayssoexceedinglydefinite,andputforwardwithsuchaquietairofmastery. Ifelt,however,thatwhenWhitneywasonceconfinedinthecabmymissionwaspracticallyaccomplished;andfortherest,Icouldnotwishanythingbetterthantobeassociatedwithmyfriendinoneofthosesingularadventureswhichwerethenormalconditionofhisexistence. InafewminutesIhadwrittenmynote,paidWhitney’sbill,ledhimouttothecab,andseenhimdriventhroughthedarkness. Inaveryshorttimeadecrepitfigurehademergedfromtheopiumden,andIwaswalkingdownthestreetwithSherlockHolmes. Fortwostreetsheshuffledalongwithabentbackandanuncertainfoot. Then,glancingquicklyround,hestraightenedhimselfoutandburstintoaheartyfitoflaughter. 

           "Isuppose,Watson,"saidhe,"thatyouimaginethatIhaveaddedopium-smokingtococaineinjections,andalltheotherlittleweaknessesonwhichyouhavefavouredmewithyourmedicalviews." 

           "Iwascertainlysurprisedtofindyouthere." 

           "ButnotmoresothanItofindyou." 

           "Icametofindafriend." 

           "AndItofindanenemy." 

           "Anenemy?" 

           "Yes;oneofmynaturalenemies,or,shallIsay,mynaturalprey.Briefly,Watson,Iaminthemidstofaveryremarkableinquiry,andIhavehopedtofindaclueintheincoherentramblingsofthesesots,asIhavedonebeforenow.
