           Therewasnorain,asHolmeshadforetold,andthemorningbrokebrightandcloudless. Atnineo’clockLestradecalledforuswiththecarriage,andwesetoffforHatherleyFarmandtheBoscombePool. 

           "Thereisseriousnewsthismorning,"Lestradeobserved. "ItissaidthatMr.Turner,oftheHall,issoillthathislifeisdespairedof." 

           "Anelderlyman,Ipresume?"saidHolmes. 

           "Aboutsixty;buthisconstitutionhasbeenshatteredbyhislifeabroad,andhehasbeeninfailinghealthforsometime. Thisbusinesshashadaverybadeffectuponhim. HewasanoldfriendofMcCarthy’s,and,Imayadd,agreatbenefactortohim,forIhavelearnedthathegavehimHatherleyFarmrentfree." 

           "Indeed!Thatisinteresting,"saidHolmes. 

           "Oh,yes!Inahundredotherwayshehashelpedhim. Everybodyaboutherespeaksofhiskindnesstohim."
