           Afteroneortwomorequestions(quitereadilyanswered)relatingtothedateandthetimeofdayatwhichFerrarihadleftthepalace,thecouriertookhisleave.

           Heatonceenteredonthenecessaryinvestigations—withouttheslightestresultsofarasFerrariwasconcerned.Nobodyhadseenhim.Nobodyappearedtohavebeentakenintohisconfidence.Nobodyknewanything(thatistosay,anythingoftheslightestimportance)evenaboutpersonssodistinguishedasLordandLadyMontbarry.Itwasreportedthatherladyship’sEnglishmaidhadlefther,beforethedisappearanceofFerrari,toreturntoherrelativesinherowncountry,andthatLadyMontbarryhadtakennostepstosupplyherplace.Hislordshipwasdescribedasbeingindelicatehealth.Helivedinthestrictestretirement—nobodywasadmittedtohim,notevenhisowncountrymen.Astupidoldwomanwasdiscoveredwhodidthehouseworkatthepalace,arrivinginthemorningandgoingawayagainatnight.
