Forthesecondtime,hewascheckedonthepointofsettingthemachineryofthehiding-placeinmotion.Onthisoccasion,theinterruptioncamefromanoutbreakoffriendlyvoicesinthecorridor.Awoman’svoiceexclaimed,’DearestAgnes,howgladIamtoseeyouagain!’Aman’svoicefollowed,offeringtointroducesomefriendto’MissLockwood.’Athirdvoice(whichHenryrecognisedasthevoiceofthemanagerofthehotel)becameaudiblenext,directingthehousekeepertoshowtheladiesandgentlementhevacantapartmentsattheotherendofthecorridor.’Ifmoreaccommodationiswanted,’themanagerwenton,’Ihaveacharmingroomtolethere.’Heopenedthedoorashespoke,andfoundhimselffacetofacewithHenryWestwick.
