           Theconvictiongraduallystrengthenedher,andshebegantoforminhermindthefirstwordsofthelettershemeanttowritetoHarney.Shewantedtowriteitatonce,andwithfeverishhandsshebegantorummageinherdrawerforasheetofletterpaper.Buttherewasnoneleft;shemustgodownstairstogetit.Shehadasuperstitiousfeelingthatthelettermustbewrittenontheinstant,thatsettingdownhersecretinwordswouldbringherreassuranceandsafety;andtakinguphercandleshewentdowntoMr.Royall’soffice.

           Atthathourshewasnotlikelytofindhimthere:hehadprobablyhadhissupperandwalkedovertoCarrickFry’s.Shepushedopenthedooroftheunlitroom,andthelightofherliftedcandlefellonhisfigure,seatedinthedarknessinhishigh-backedchair.Hisarmslayalongthearmsofthechair,andhisheadwasbentalittle;buthelifteditquicklyasCharityentered.Shestartedbackastheireyesmet,rememberingthatherownwereredwithweeping,andthatherfacewaslividwiththefatigueandemotionofherjourney.Butitwastoolatetoescape,andshestoodandlookedathiminsilence.

           Hehadrisenfromhischair,andcametowardherwithoutstretchedhands.Thegesturewassounexpectedthatshelethimtakeherhandsinhisandtheystoodthus,withoutspeaking,tillMr.Royallsaidgravely:“Charity—wasyoulookingforme?”
