           She,CharityRoyall,wastheonlybeingonearthwhoreallyknewhim,knewhimfromthesolesofhisfeettotherumpledcrestofhishair,knewtheshiftinglightsinhiseyes,andtheinflexionsofhisvoice,andthethingshelikedanddisliked,andeverythingtherewastoknowabouthim,asminutelyandyetunconsciouslyasachildknowsthewallsoftheroomitwakesupineverymorning.Itwasthisfact,whichnobodyaboutherguessed,orwouldhaveunderstood,thatmadeherlifesomethingapartandinviolable,asifnothinghadanypowertohurtordisturbheraslongashersecretwassafe.

           Towardsunsetthegirlsdisbanded.Theirworkwasdone,andthenextmorningatdaylightthedraperiesandgarlandsweretobenailedup,andtheilluminatedscrollsputinplaceintheTownHall.ThefirstguestsweretodriveoverfromHepburnintimeforthemiddaybanquetunderatentinMissHatchard’sfield;andafterthattheceremoniesweretobegin.
