           Hediscernedtheyounggirl’sforminthepassage,andsaid,“Thomasin,then,hasreachedhome.Howcouldyouleavemeinthatway,darling?”AndturningtoMrs.Yeobright—“Itwasuselesstoarguewithher.Shewouldgo,andgoalone.”

           “Butwhat’sthemeaningofitall?”demandedMrs.Yeobrighthaughtily.

           “Takeaseat,”saidWildeve,placingchairsforthetwowomen.
