           Sheagainbecameutterlydowncast;andCharley,seeingthatshewasnotgoingtoeatordrinkanymore,tookawaythetray.

           Afterwardsheoccasionallycameintoseeifthefirewasburning,toaskherifshewantedanything,totellherthatthewindhadshiftedfromsouthtowest,toaskherifshewouldlikehimtogatherhersomeblackberries;toallwhichinquiriessherepliedinthenegativeorwithindifference.

           Sheremainedonthesetteesometimelonger,whenshearousedherselfandwentupstairs.Theroominwhichshehadformerlysleptstillremainedmuchasshehadleftit,andtherecollectionthatthisforceduponherofherowngreatlychangedandinfinitelyworsenedsituationagainsetonherfacetheundeterminedandformlessmiserywhichithadwornonherfirstarrival.Shepeepedintohergrandfather’sroom,throughwhichthefreshautumnairwasblowingfromtheopenwindow.Hereyewasarrestedbywhatwasafamiliarsightenough,thoughitbrokeuponhernowwithanewsignificance.

           Itwasabraceofpistols,hangingneartheheadofhergrandfather’sbed,whichhealwayskeptthereloaded,asaprecautionagainstpossibleburglars,thehousebeingverylonely.Eustaciaregardedthemlong,asiftheywerethepageofabookinwhichshereadanewandastrangematter.
