           “Ihaveonlybeenabletogetonealiveandfreshasheoughttobe,”saidSam.“TheselimponesaretwoIkilledtodayatwork;butastheydon’tdietillthesungoesdowntheycan’tbeverystalemeat.”

           Theliveadderregardedtheassembledgroupwithasinisterlookinitssmallblackeye,andthebeautifulbrownandjetpatternonitsbackseemedtointensifywithindignation.Mrs.Yeobrightsawthecreature,andthecreaturesawher—shequiveredthroughout,andavertedhereyes.

           “Lookatthat,”murmuredChristianCantle.“Neighbours,howdoweknowbutthatsomethingoftheoldserpentinGod’sgarden,thatgiedtheappletotheyoungwomanwithnoclothes,livesoninaddersandsnakesstill?Lookathiseye—foralltheworldlikeavillainoussortofblackcurrant.’Tistobehopedhecan’till-wishus!There’sfolksinheathwho’vebeenoverlookedalready.IwillneverkillanotheradderaslongasIlive.
