           Bythistimeshehadtakenhimtothebackdoor,whichwasopen,disclosingapathleadingdownthegarden.“Now,oneword,Damon,”sheremarkedashesteppedforth.“Thisisyourfirstvisithere;letitbeyourlast.Wehavebeenhotloversinourtime,butitwon’tdonow.Good-bye.”

           “Good-bye,”saidWildeve.“IhavehadallIcamefor,andIamsatisfied.”

           “Whatwasit?”

           “Asightofyou.UponmyeternalhonourIcamefornomore.”

           Wildevekissedhishandtothebeautifulgirlheaddressed,andpassedintothegarden,whereshewatchedhimdownthepath,overthestileattheend,andintothefernsoutside,whichbrushedhishipsashewentalongtillhebecamelostintheirthickets.Whenhehadquitegonesheslowlyturned,anddirectedherattentiontotheinteriorofthehouse.

           ButitwaspossiblethatherpresencemightnotbedesiredbyClymandhismotheratthismomentoftheirfirstmeeting,orthatitwouldbesuperfluous.Atallevents,shewasinnohurrytomeetMrs.Yeobright.SheresolvedtowaittillClymcametolookforher,andglidedbackintothegarden.
