           “IwillconsiderifIknowofone,”repliedVenninthatsamelighttonewhichmeantnolightness.Andthenhebowedinamannerofhisowninventionandmovedtogo.Thomasinofferedhimherhand;andwithoutasigh,thoughwithfoodformany,thereddlemanwentout.

           WhenWildevereturned,aquarterofanhourlaterThomasinsaidsimply,andintheabashedmannerusualwithhernow,“Whereisthehorse,Damon?”

           “O,Ihavenotboughtit,afterall.Themanaskstoomuch
