           Awholevillage-fullofsensuousemotion,scatteredabroadalltheyearlong,surgedhereinafocusforanhour.Thefortyheartsofthosewavingcoupleswerebeatingastheyhadnotdonesince,twelvemonthsbefore,theyhadcometogetherinsimilarjollity.Forthetimepaganismwasrevivedintheirhearts,theprideoflifewasallinall,andtheyadorednoneotherthanthemselves.

           Howmanyofthoseimpassionedbuttemporaryembracesweredestinedtobecomeperpetualwaspossiblythewonderofsomeofthosewhoindulgedinthem,aswellasofEustaciawholookedon.Shebegantoenvythosepirouetters,tohungerforthehopeandhappinesswhichthefascinationofthedanceseemedtoengenderwithinthem.Desperatelyfondofdancingherself,oneofEustacia’sexpectationsofParishadbeentheopportunityitmightaffordherofindulgenceinthisfavouritepastime.Unhappily,thatexpectationwasnowextinctwithinherforever.
