           OnoneofthesewarmafternoonsEustaciawalkedoutaloneinthedirectionofYeobright’splaceofwork.Hewasbusilychoppingawayatthefurze,alongrowoffaggotswhichstretcheddownwardfromhispositionrepresentingthelabouroftheday.Hedidnotobserveherapproach,andshestoodclosetohim,andheardhisundercurrentofsong.Itshockedher.Toseehimthere,apoorafflictedman,earningmoneybythesweatofhisbrow,hadatfirstmovedhertotears;buttohearhimsingandnotatallrebelagainstanoccupationwhich,howeversatisfactorytohimself,wasdegradingtoher,asaneducatedlady-wife,woundedherthrough.Unconsciousofherpresence,hestillwentonsinging:—

           “Lepointdujour

           Anosbosquetsrendtouteleurparure;

           Floreestplusbelleasonretour;

           L’oiseaureprenddouxchantd’amour;

           Toutcelebredanslanature

           Lepointdujour.

           “Lepointdujour

           Causeparfois,causedouleurextreme;

           Quel’espacedesnuitsestcourt

           Pourlebergerbrulantd’amour,

           Forcedequittercequ’ilaime

           Aupointdujour!”

           ItwasbitterlyplaintoEustaciathathedidnotcaremuchaboutsocialfailure;andtheproudfairwomanbowedherheadandweptinsickdespairatthoughtoftheblastingeffectuponherownlifeofthatmoodandconditioninhim.Thenshecameforward.

           “Iwouldstarveratherthandoit!”sheexclaimedvehemently.“Andyoucansing!Iwillgoandlivewithmygrandfatheragain!”

           “Eustacia!Ididnotseeyou,thoughInoticedsomethingmoving,”hesaidgently.Hecameforward,pulledoffhishugeleatherglove,andtookherhand.
