           Shestartedattwoo’clock,andhermeetingwithEustaciawashastenedbytheappearanceoftheyoungladybesidethepoolandbankwhichborderedhergrandfather’spremises,whereshestoodsurveyingthescene,andperhapsthinkingoftheromanticenactmentsithadwitnessedinpastdays.WhenMrs.Yeobrightapproached,Eustaciasurveyedherwiththecalmstareofastranger.

           Themother-in-lawwasthefirsttospeak.“Iwascomingtoseeyou,”shesaid.

           “Indeed!”saidEustaciawithsurprise,forMrs.Yeobright,muchtothegirl’smortification,hadrefusedtobepresentatthewedding.“Ididnotatallexpectyou.”

           “Iwascomingonbusinessonly,”saidthevisitor,morecoldlythanatfirst.
