           Whilesheremainedthus,overcomebyherforebodings,theoldclockindoorswhizzedforthtwelvestrokes.Soonafter,faintsoundsfloatedtoherearfromafaroverthehills.Thebreezecamefromthatquarter,andithadbroughtwithitthenotesofdistantbells,gailystartingoffinapeal:one,two,three,four,five.TheringersatEastEgdonwereannouncingthenuptialsofEustaciaandherson.

           “Thenitisover,”shemurmured.“Well,well!andlifetoowillbeoversoon.AndwhyshouldIgoonscaldingmyfacelikethis?Cryaboutonethinginlife,cryaboutall;onethreadrunsthroughthewholepiece.Andyetwesay,’atimetolaugh!’”

           TowardseveningWildevecame.SinceThomasin’smarriageMrs.Yeobrighthadshownhimthatgrimfriendlinesswhichatlastarisesinallsuchcasesofundesiredaffinity.Thevisionofwhatoughttohavebeenisthrownasideinsheerweariness,andbrowbeatenhumanendeavourlistlesslymakesthebestofthefactthatis.
