           “Sheneveroncetoldmeofthisoldlover.”

           “ThegentlestwomenarenotsuchfoolsastoshowEVERYcard.”

           “Well,ifshewantshimIsupposeshemusthavehim.”

           “Itiseasyenoughtosaythat;butyoudon’tseethedifficulty.Hewantshermuchmorethanshewantshim;andbeforeIcanencourageanythingofthesortImusthaveaclearunderstandingfromyouthatyouwillnotinterferetoinjureanarrangementwhichIpromoteinthebeliefthatitisforthebest.Suppose,whentheyareengaged,andeverythingissmoothlyarrangedfortheirmarriage,thatyoushouldstepbetweenthemandrenewyoursuit?Youmightnotwinherback,butyoumightcausemuchunhappiness.”

           “OfcourseIshoulddonosuchthing,”saidWildeve“Buttheyarenotengagedyet.HowdoyouknowthatThomasinwouldaccepthim?”
