           Itwassometimessuggestedthatreddlemenwerecriminalsforwhosemisdeedsothermenwrongfullysuffered—thatinescapingthelawtheyhadnotescapedtheirownconsciences,andhadtakentothetradeasalifelongpenance.Elsewhyshouldtheyhavechosenit?Inthepresentcasesuchaquestionwouldhavebeenparticularlyapposite.ThereddlemanwhohadenteredEgdonthatafternoonwasaninstanceofthepleasingbeingwastedtoformtheground-workofthesingular,whenanuglyfoundationwouldhavedonejustaswellforthatpurpose.Theonepointthatwasforbiddingaboutthisreddlemanwashiscolour.Freedfromthathewouldhavebeenasagreeableaspecimenofrusticmanhoodasonewouldoftensee.Akeenobservermighthavebeeninclinedtothink—whichwas,indeed,partlythetruth—thathehadrelinquishedhisproperstationinlifeforwantofinterestinit.
