Frecklesbarelyescapedcryingaloudforjoy.
“Thendon’tyoueverbetorturingyourselfandyourhorsetobecominginhereagain,”hesaid.“I’llshowyouawaytodrivealmosttothenestontheeasttrail,andthenyoucancomearoundtomyroomandstaywhiletheBirdWomanworks.It’snearlyalwayscoolthere,andthere’scomfortableseats,andwater.”
“Oh!didyouhavedrinking-waterthere?”shecried.“Iwasneversothirstyorsohungryinmylife,butIthoughtIwouldn’tmentionit.”
“AndIhadnotthewittobeseeing!”wailedFreckles.“Icanbegettingyouagooddrinkinnotime.”
Heturnedtothetrail.
“Pleasewaitaminute,”calledtheAngel.“What’syourname?Iwanttothinkaboutyouwhileyouaregone.”Frecklesliftedhisfacewiththebrownriftacrossitandsmiledquizzically.
“Freckles?”sheguessed,withapealoflaughter.“Andmineis——”
“I’mknowingyours,”interruptedFreckles.
“Idon’tbelieveyoudo.Whatisit?”askedthegirl.
“Youwon’tbegettingangry?”
“NotuntilI’vehadthewater,atleast.”
ItwasFreckles’turntolaugh.Hewhippedoffhisbig,floppystrawhat,stooduncoveredbeforeher,andsaid,inthesweetestofallthesweettonesofhisvoice:“There’snothingyoucouldbebuttheSwampAngel.”
Thegirllaughedhappily.
