           McLeansaidhewasverywilling,orderedthedrivertobreaklineandloadthelog,detailingmentoassist.HetoldFrecklestorideonasectionofthemaplewithhim,butnowtheboyaskedtoentertheswampwithDuncan.

           “Idon’tseewhyyouwanttogo,”saidMcLean.“Ihavenobusinesstoletyououttodayatall.”

           “Goahead,”saidMcLean.“That’sadifferentstory.Iftheyhappentobethere,whytellDuncanhemustgiveupthetreeuntiltheyhavefinishedwithit.”

           Thenheclimbedonawagonandwasdrivenaway.Freckleshurriedintotheswamp.Hewasalittlebehind,yethecouldseethemen.Beforeheovertookthem,theyhadturnedfromthewestroadandhadenteredtheswamptowardtheeast.

           Theystoppedatthetrunkofamonstrousprostratelog.
