Onthelinesideheleftthebushesthickforconcealment,enteringbyanarrowpathheandDuncanhadclearedinsettingupthecase.Hecalledthisthefrontdoor,thoughheusedeveryprecautiontohideit.Hebuiltrusticseatsbetweenseveralofthetrees,leveledthefloor,andthicklycarpeteditwithrank,heavy,woolly-dogmoss.Aroundthecaseheplantedwildclematis,bittersweet,andwild-grapevines,andtrainedthemoverituntilitwasalmostcovered.Everydayheplantednewflowers,cutbackroughbushes,andcoaxedoutgracefulones.Hisprideinhisroomwasverygreat,buthehadnoideahowsurprisinglybeautifulitwouldappeartoanyonewhohadnotwitnesseditsgrowthandconstruction.
ThismorningFreckleswalkedstraighttohiscase,unlockedit,andsethisapparatusanddinnerinside.Heplantedanewspecimenhehadfoundclosethetrail,and,bringinghisoldscrap-bucketfromthecornerinwhichitwashidden,fromanear-bypoolhedippedwatertopouroverhiscarpetandflowers.
