           Anythingfromthemanthatknowinglyleftmefatherandmemothertogocoldandhungry,andintothefireinmisery,whenjustalittlewouldhavemadelifesobeautifultothem,andsavedmethiscrippledbody—moneythathewilledfrommewhenheknewIwasliving,ofhisbloodandoncharityamongstrangers,Idon’ttouch,notifIfreeze,starve,andburntoo!Ifthereain’tenoughbesidesthat,andIcan’tbeearningenoughtofixthingsfortheAngel——”

           “Now,”saidtheAngel,“weareallgoinghome.WehavedoneallwecanforFreckles.Hispeoplearehere.Heshouldknowthem.Theyareveryanxioustobecomeacquaintedwithhim.We’llresignhimtothem.Whenheiswell,why,thenhewillbeperfectlyfreetogotoIrelandorcometotheLimberlost,justashechooses.Wewillgoatonce.”

           McLeanheldoutforaweek,andthenhecouldendureitnolonger.HewashearthungryforFreckles.Communingwithhimselfinthelong,soundfulnightsoftheswamp,hehadlearnedtohisastonishmentthatforthepastyearhishearthadbeencirclingtheLimberlostwithFreckles.Hebegantowishthathehadnotlefthim.Perhapstheboy—hisboybyfirstright,afterall—wasbeingneglected.
