Amongthebirdsitreallyseemedasifthelittleyellowfellowswereinthepreponderance.Atleast,theywereuntiltheredwingedblackbirdsandbobolinks,thathadnestedontheupland,suddenlysawintheswampthegardenoftheLordandcameswarmingbyhundredstofeastandadventureuponittheselastfewweeksbeforemigration.Neverwasthereafinerfeastspreadforthebirds.Thegrasseswerefilledwithseeds:so,too,wereweedsofeveryvariety.Fallberrieswereripe.Wildgrapesandblackhawswereready.Bugswerecreepingeverywhere.Themuckwasyeastywithworms.Insectsfilledtheair.Naturemadegloriouspauseforholidaybeforehernextchange,andbynoneofthefrequentersoftheswampwasthismoreappreciatedthanbythebigblackchickens.
Theyseemedtofeelthenewreignofpeaceandfullnessmostofall.Asforfood,theydidnotevenhavetohuntforthemselvesthesedays,forthefeastsnowbeingspreadbeforeLittleChickenweremorethanhecoulduse,andhewasgladtohavehisparentscomedownandhelphim.
