“Aseriousoperationwillbenecessarybeforethatcanbedone.Buttherearestillfourcartridgesintherevolver.Twohavebeenfiredandtwowoundsinflicted,sothateachbulletcanbeaccountedfor.”
“Soitwouldseem,”saidHolmes.“Perhapsyoucanaccountalsoforthebulletwhichhassoobviouslystrucktheedgeofthewindow?”
Hehadturnedsuddenly,andhislong,thinfingerwaspointingtoaholewhichhadbeendrilledrightthroughthelowerwindow-sash,aboutaninchabovethebottom.

“BecauseIlookedforit.”
“Wonderful!”saidthecountrydoctor.“Youarecertainlyright,sir.Thenathirdshothasbeenfired,andthereforeathirdpersonmusthavebeenpresent.Butwhocouldthathavebeen,andhowcouldhehavegotaway?”
