InspectorMartinhadthegoodsensetoallowmyfriendtodothingsinhisownfashion,andcontentedhimselfwithcarefullynotingtheresults.Thelocalsurgeon,anold,white-hairedman,hadjustcomedownfromMrs.HiltonCubitt’sroom,andhereportedthatherinjurieswereserious,butnotnecessarilyfatal.Thebullethadpassedthroughthefrontofherbrain,anditwouldprobablybesometimebeforeshecouldregainconsciousness.Onthequestionofwhethershehadbeenshotorhadshotherself,hewouldnotventuretoexpressanydecidedopinion.Certainlythebullethadbeendischargedatveryclosequarters.Therewasonlytheonepistolfoundintheroom,twobarrelsofwhichhadbeenemptied.Mr.HiltonCubitthadbeenshotthroughtheheart.Itwasequallyconceivablethathehadshotherandthenhimself,orthatshehadbeenthecriminal,fortherevolverlayuponthefloormidwaybetweenthem.
