Shewasbrownwiththedustanddrapedwiththecobwebswhichhadcomefromthewallsofherhiding-place.Herface,too,wasstreakedwithgrime,andatthebestshecouldneverhavebeenhandsome,forshehadtheexactphysicalcharacteristicswhichHolmeshaddivined,with,inaddition,alongandobstinatechin.Whatwithhernaturalblindness,andwhatwiththechangefromdarktolight,shestoodasonedazed,blinkingabouthertoseewhereandwhowewere.Andyet,inspiteofallthesedisadvantages,therewasacertainnobilityinthewoman’sbearing—agallantryinthedefiantchinandintheupraisedhead,whichcompelledsomethingofrespectandadmiration.
