           “Nonames,please!”saidHolmes,asweknockedatGilchrist’sdoor.Atall,flaxen-haired,slimyoungfellowopenedit,andmadeuswelcomewhenheunderstoodourerrand.Thereweresomereallycuriouspiecesofmediævaldomesticarchitecturewithin.Holmeswassocharmedwithoneofthemthatheinsistedondrawingitinhisnotebook,brokehispencil,hadtoborrowonefromourhostandfinallyborrowedaknifetosharpenhisown.ThesamecuriousaccidenthappenedtohimintheroomsoftheIndian—asilent,little,hook-nosedfellow,whoeyedusaskance,andwasobviouslygladwhenHolmes’sarchitecturalstudieshadcometoanend.IcouldnotseethatineithercaseHolmeshadcomeupontheclueforwhichhewassearching.Onlyatthethirddidourvisitproveabortive.Theouterdoorwouldnotopentoourknock,andnothingmoresubstantialthanatorrentofbadlanguagecamefrombehindit.“Idon’tcarewhoyouare.Youcangotoblazes!”roaredtheangryvoice.“Tomorrow’stheexam,andIwon’tbedrawnbyanyone.”

           “Arudefellow,”saidourguide,flushingwithangeraswewithdrewdownthestair.
