           Travellersforthevarietytouristhadhardlydevelopedintoadistinctspeciesatthisdatesometimessaidinpassing,whentheycasttheireyesuptothesign-bearingtree,thatartistswerefondofrepresentingthesignboardhangingthus,butthattheythemselveshadneverbeforenoticedsoperfectaninstanceinactualworkingorder.ItwasnearthistreethatthewaggonwasstandingintowhichGabrielOakcreptonhisfirstjourneytoWeatherbury;but,owingtothedarkness,thesignandtheinnhadbeenunobserved.
