           AflashofindignationmighthavebeenseeninBathsheba’sdarkeyesasshelookedresolutelyaheadafterthisreply.Theymovedonwithoutfurtherspeech,someearly-witheredleavesfromthetreeswhichhoodedtheroadatthisspotoccasionallyspinningdownwardacrosstheirpathtotheearth.

           Awomanappearedonthebrowofthehill.Theridgewasinacutting,sothatshewasverynearthehusbandandwifebeforeshebecamevisible.Troyhadturnedtowardsthegigtoremount,andwhilstputtinghisfootonthestepthewomanpassedbehindhim.

           Thoughtheovershadowingtreesandtheapproachofeventideenvelopedthemingloom,Bathshebacouldseeplainlyenoughtodiscerntheextremepovertyofthewoman’sgarb,andthesadnessofherface.
