           "Holdon!"saidGabriel,takingthesheaffromhershoulder,andgraspingherarmagain.

           Heavenopenedthen,indeed.Theflashwasalmosttoonovelforitsinexpressiblydangerousnaturetobeatoncerealized,andtheycouldonlycomprehendthemagnificenceofitsbeauty.Itsprangfromeast,west,north,south,andwasaperfectdanceofdeath.Theformsofskeletonsappearedintheair,shapedwithbluefireforbonesdancing,leaping,striding,racingaround,andminglingaltogetherinunparalleledconfusion.Withthesewereintertwinedundulatingsnakesofgreen,andbehindthesewasabroadmassoflesserlight.Simultaneouslycamefromeverypartofthetumblingskywhatmaybecalledashout;since,thoughnoshoutevercamenearit,itwasmoreofthenatureofashoutthanofanythingelseearthly.InthemeantimeoneofthegrislyformshadalighteduponthepointofGabriel’srod,toruninvisiblydownit,downthechain,andintotheearth.
