           Troyturnedupthehillandquickenedhispace.Boldwoodsteppedforward.

           "SergeantTroy?"

           "YesI’mSergeantTroy."

           "Justarrivedfromupthecountry,Ithink?"

           "JustarrivedfromBath."

           "IamWilliamBoldwood."

           "Indeed."

           ThetoneinwhichthiswordwasutteredwasallthathadbeenwantedtobringBoldwoodtothepoint.

           "Iwishtospeakawordwithyou,"hesaid.

           "Whatabout?"

           "Aboutherwholivesjustaheadthereandaboutawomanyouhavewronged."

           "Iwonderatyourimpertinence,"saidTroy,movingon.

           TroyheardthedulldeterminationinBoldwood’svoice,lookedathisstalwartframe,thenatthethickcudgelhecarriedinhishand.
